Verulamians fought back from 17-0 down to defeat Royston 24-17 after extra time in their Herts Trophy first round tie.
With three new backs on show it took the first half to settle Vees down. Missed tackles and simple penalties gave Royston their merited half-time lead.
But James Hayes, the Vees captain, must have given his team the appropriate message in his half-time talk, because their reaction was impressive in the second half.
Tries were scored by Darren Westhead, Mike Ainsworth and Tim Rangihura before substitute winger Levi White scored the extra time winner for Verulamians to send them into the next round.
