St Albans City joint-manager James Gray admits his team did not have enough quality on Saturday after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Hayes and Yeading United.

The Saints had to settle for a point from their National League South match, which leaves them fifth from bottom in the table after 11 matches.

Gray said: “It’s a game I felt we could have won before the match. The way we started, I thought we would go on and be bright and get the three points.

“But for some reason we took our foot off the gas and allowed them back into the game.

“We didn’t do enough to win the game. We didn’t have enough quality today. They probably didn’t do enough to win it so it’s probably a fair outcome.”

The Saints fell behind at Clarence Park four minutes before the break. Former City player Howard Hall sent a pinpoint pass into the path of Ismael Ehui and his shot was parried by Joe Welch. But it only fell back in front of Elliot Benyon and he tucked the ball into the net.

St Albans have been reliant on the goals of summer signing Louie Theophanous this season and it proved no different on Saturday as he helped rescue a point.

The equaliser came in the 49th minute when Kevin Krans released Theophanous and he neatly tucked his effort past the visiting goalkeeper.

Speaking after the match, Gray said: “I think it’s been the story of our season where we’ve had patches where we’ve done well but haven’t consistently kept it up for the full 90 minutes.

“It’s something we’re trying to address and work on. I thought we looked a little bit lethargic today.

“I fully expected us to try to get the three points and I do believe it’s two points dropped on our own patch against Hayes and Yeading.”
