Harpenden Common Golf Club’s scratch team defeated Moor Park Golf Club’s scratch team to win the Herts Golf Division One Scratch League.

The Common went into the final match of the season knowing a win of any sort would be enough for them to leapfrog West Herts and Letchworth to gain top spot.

The Common got off to a hot start in the foursomes with Tony Wilkins and Lewis Watcham winning 4&3, closely followed by Kevin Hurley and Simon Hankin with a 5&4 win.

Gordon Forster and Josh Emerton closed their match out on the 16th hole with a 3&2 win and Martin Streets and Elliot Leonard secured a one hole victory with a par on the 18th.

A 4-0 lead was augmented by quick wins by Lewis Watcham (7&6), Josh Emerton (5&4) and Simon Hankin (6&5) which secured the championship.

Gordon Forster and Kevin Hurley went on to win closely fought matches and Moor Park’s captain, Mitchell Steel had a consolation win on the 18th with a 40-foot putt to beat Tony Wilkins.

Martin Streets and Elliot Leonard lost by a hole and 2&1 respectively to make the final result a resounding 9-3 to the Common.

With the four bonus points, Harpenden Common won the title for the first time since 2012.

Harpenden Common’s scratch team captain Alex Turner said: “To go to Moor Park, where we have never won before, and put up a performance like that gives the team and the club a tremendous boost.”
