Harpenden Town scored a 3-1 victory over Broadfields United on Saturday as the team celebrated the official opening of their new clubhouse.

The action packed game saw two red cards and three goals in ten minutes during the second half.

Manager Danny Plumb said: "We deserved the victory but we had to work very hard for the result and Jimmy Hill did a brilliant job in a very short time.

"I know the players loved the reception from the crowd which was our biggest of the season and their support gave the players a big lift."

In the first half Harpenden struggled to get in the box against a tough Broadfields defence but after 40 minutes Alex Yearwood pounced on a badly judged back pass and slotted the ball past the keeper to take the lead.

At the start of the second half Ben Warren got a red card for lashing out after a clattering tackle.

Despite being down to ten men Harpenden kept on the attack and on 63 minutes scored when a corner was headed on and landed at the feet of Hill who cooly side-footed it into the corner of the net for 2-0.

Two minutes later Broadfields got a penalty for hand ball and pulled one back.

Jimmy Hill was then through on goal with only the keeper to beat when he was pushed to the ground by a defender who was sent off.

From the resulting free kick Hill rifled a shot into the corner of the net to make it 3-1 after 69 minutes.

Hill suffered a bang to his knee on 75 minutes and had to retire but he had already sealed the victory after only being on the pitch for a quarter of the game.

It was a great victory as Harpenden celebrated the opening of the new clubhouse with hundreds of kids and parents enjoying a mini-tournament and the youngsters providing a guard of honour as the first team took to the pitch.
