St Albans Hockey Club men’s team are sitting top of the East of England Premier League after a 2-1 win against Dereham at Oaklands on Saturday.

David Williams and Matt Hodgson scored for the Tangerines to the delight of the home crowd.

The ladies first team are also in a strong league position after a 0-0 draw with Cambridge City put them third in the East of England National League.

The ladies fought back after going 1-0 down against Dereham to win the game 3-1 with Hayley Payne (2) and Fiona Nekeman firing home the goals.

The Boadiceas also finished with a 3-1 victory after Mary Oswin (2) and Helen Benny-Anton found the back of the net.

There were further wins across the men’s section with the fourth team winning 5-4 against Cheshunt with goals from Ryan Gawley, Chad Barrett, Duncan Fraser (2) and Malcolm Emmerson.

St Albans fifths had a scoring spree and won 8-1 against Hertford with James Durham (4), Dave Thomas (2), Alistair Sykes and Mike Curtis all scoring for the Tangerines.

The seventh and eighth teams both came away with 5-1 wins against Potters Bar and Winchmore Hill and Enfield respectively with goals coming from Ian Thompson (2), Nick Mulvaney, Tom Jacobs, Alex Scolefield, Matt Ashby, George Turner (2), Andy Golding and Sean Kelleher.

The men’s Praetorians rounded off a successful weekend for the club with a 3-0 win against Bromley and Beckenham (goals from Ian Knox, Jean-Paul Vincent and Geoff Hayward).
