Substitute Charlie Gould scored two goals in two minutes to give Harpenden Town a 5-2 victory over Buntingford Town in the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy at Rothamsted Park on Saturday.

Harpenden were struggling to hold on to their 3-2 lead in the second half when Gould came on with ten minutes to go.

Tom Collin picked up the ball on the halfway line and surged forward to hit a perfect pass to Gould on the edge of the box, who hit a searing first time shot into the corner of the net after 86 minutes.

Just two minutes later Gould made the game safe when he headed the ball into the net.

Harpenden went ahead after 30 minutes when Yearwood scored a superb solo effort.

But Buntingford levelled from the penalty spot and the visitors took the lead at the start of the second half.

But Harpenden responded when Collin fired a volley into the net for the equaliser. Town were back in front on 68 minutes through Ben Warren.

Buntingford continued to press and the result was still in doubt until Gould’s purple patch put the result beyond doubt.

Manager Danny Plumb said: “We got a great reaction from the team in the second half after being 2-1 down but the pitch made it difficult in pretty bad conditions.

“All the youngsters played really well, as well as Charlie, Alex Yearwood was always threatening and our keeper Jacob McLean made some great saves. It is good to see us into the next round.”
