St Albans City Football Club have been rocked by the sudden resignation of long-serving club secretary Steve Eames.

Former St Albans postman Eames, who has served the National League South club in various positions over the past 25 years, tendered his resignation on Tuesday and left the club with immediate effect.

A supporter of the club in his youth he resumed his connection with the City in around 1990 after several years of watching Tottenham Hotspur.

During his time with the Saints he has served as match secretary, reserve team secretary, kit-man and, since 1999 – when he was appointed by the then City chairman Lee Harding – club secretary.

He is also responsible for the maintenance of the Clarence Park pitch and, for an interim period, has agreed to act as a consultant with regards to the playing surface.

St Albans City are expected to post a notice on the club website regarding Steve Eames resignation later this morning (Wednesday).

The club are expected to hand, at least temporarily, the role of secretary to 23-year-old Tom Norman, who is currently the Saints commercial manager.
