Harry Wheeler believes his appointment as St Albans City’s caretaker manager will give the Saints much-needed stability over of the Christmas period.

The decision to appoint Wheeler, 27, as City boss on an interim basis was announced on Saturday as the club revealed they had been unable to find a suitable successor for Graham Golds and Jimmy Gray following their resignations last month.

The Saints face Maidenhead United (Tuesday), Basingstoke Town, Bishop’s Stortford and Chelmsford City before the month is out and Wheeler says continuity was at the core of the club’s decision.

“I think it’s important for the players to have stability,” he said. “I’m pretty comfortable with it but it’s better for the players to know the person taking the team for the moment is going to there a little while longer.

“I won’t be bringing in ten players or anything like that whereas someone else coming in from the outside could quite easily do that.

“We just want to get through the Christmas period,” he continued. “So I’ll probably be in charge for a minimum of two weeks.

“Because of the limited training sessions in that time any change probably wouldn’t really work anyway as you’ve only got a day between games.

“It’s the ideal period for me. If someone else comes in to put their own stamp on things they would be unlikely to work.”

Wheeler has previously been assistant manager at Potters Bar Town after retiring from playing at an early age and says management has always been his plan.

“I’m always thinking ahead,” explained Wheeler. “It’s not come too early for me. I’ve been in non-league football since I was 19.

“I’ve been around the game longer than some people double my age. I know how it works - the budget, etc - and the management side is just managing people.

“When you’ve been in the background you get to see how people manage players so you start to take things on board and put your own spin on it.”

One change Wheeler has already made is the capture of former Watford, Forest Green Rovers and Hemel Hempstead Town centre-back Eddie Oshodi.

“His character is what made me want to sign him,” explained Wheeler. “That’s the main thing for me when you bring players in.

“He wants to be at the club, he’s bought into what we’re about and how we want to play.

“He’s professional and he will be good for the dressing room. He will give us another option to compliment the other two centre-backs at the club.”

The Saints didn't have a game at the weekend and hosted Maidenhead United at Clarence Park on Tuesday. They will travel to Basingstoke on Saturday.
