St Albans City co-owner Lawrence Levy insists it was a unanimous team decision by the club to give Harry Wheeler the management job until the end of the season.

Wheeler has been in charge of the side on a caretaker basis since the end of November following the departures of James Gray and Graham Golds.

The Saints are currently third bottom in the National League South, facing a battle to stay in the division, and the club made the decision to give Wheeler the job for the remainder of the campaign.

Levy said: “It was a unanimous team decision to keep Harry until the end of the season.

“We just felt he has brought stability to the squad and our first priority remains to keep the team in the division.”

Mark Boyce, Rhys Thom and Sam Backhouse will continue as his backroom staff.

The club have also appointed Adam Lee as director of football.

A club statement said: “Adam has a wealth of management experience along with a strong knowledge of playing matters and contacts.

“His remit will be to oversee all football business matters on behalf of the chairman and club owners.”

Tom Norman will also act as football secretary alongside his commercial activities.

City return to league action this Saturday with a trip to Oxford City.

Meanwhile the club have decided to withdraw their reserve team from South Midlands Division Two.

The Saints were growing increasingly frustrated with the amount of postponed games and will look into the possibility of joining another league in the future.

Levy said: “There were a lot of games being cancelled because of the quality of the pitches. The regularity of matches was very hit and miss.

“Ultimately the regularity of games being postponed wasn’t conducive to the development of our players.”
