Verulamians are into the final of the Herts Trophy after a 33-15 victory at Cheshunt.

The Vees will play Watford RFC in the final, having the privilege of playing at Saracens’ Allianz Park at the end of the month.

Captain James Hayes decided to play the first half uphill and give kicking duties to Alex Ricci.

The decisions paid off a treat. Excellent work by the forwards and backs helped to keep them in the game at half-time, with the score 6-15, and they had Ricci to thank after he converted two 50-metre penalties.

Ricci and Cameron Crag maintained the high performance levels in the second period to put pressure on Cheshunt and force them to defend.

More effective kicking by Ricci allowed winger Sam Allen space to burst past the opposition to score two, with Ben Russell and Sam Townsend later adding their own.

It was a convincing return to form for the Vees, who fell to a 29-6 defeat to London Welsh Amateurs due to unavailability and injuries. Their last match of the season is against UCS Old Boys at Cotlandswick this Saturday at 3pm.

The final will take place on Saturday, April 30, at 11am.
