Amy Platten celebrated her call-up to the GB squad for the Cadet European Championships in Finland by winning a bronze medal at the European Cup.

The St Albans-based judo player’s special weekend began when she received a selection letter asking her to represent Great Britain at the Cadet European Championships in Finland next month.

The teenager captured the bronze medal at the European Cup in Coimbra, Portugal, adding to her two previous bronze medals from Spain and Romania.

Her day began well with a convincing win by throwing the Belgium, Amelien Deckers, twice.

That earned her a quarter-final fight with the Spanish European Cup winner, Mireia Comas Lapuerta where she was beaten by a single penalty.

She then had to refocus to fight through the repechage where she was paired with Liza Gateau, who scored first against her with a hip throw. But Platten's response was effective, catching the French player with a well-worked rolling strangle for a submission.

She then took on Israeli opponent Tamar Malca and the pair could not be separated at the end of the four-minute contest, taking the showdown into a Golden Score contest where the first to score wins.

Platten’s strength and stamina proved decisive and as the clock ticked past the seven-minute mark she forced her opponent into a mistake.

She was rewarded for her control of the bronze medal fight when she threw the Russian, Anastasiia Khripunova, with a big Uchi Mata for ippon.

Platten said: “I was really pleased with my performance in all my fights, even the one I lost. The biggest test was the Israeli girl, my dad [coach] has helped me prepare for these types of fights and all the effort and pain of training paid off.

“The cherry on the cake was to be selected for the European Championships, I know I can get better and will give my best to try and come back with a medal.”
