London Colney will travel to Hadley in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup next month after their 1-0 win at Desborough Town on Saturday.

The Blueboys had to wait until the 80th minute for their winner in the preliminary round tie.

Jon Clements set up Spencer Clarke-Mardel and he curled a superb strike past goalkeeper Chris Jones for the crucial breakthrough to take the Blueboys into the next round.

But Harpenden Town’s FA Cup hopes were shattered after conceding twice late on in their 2-0 defeat at Chalfont St Peter.

Manager Danny Plumb said: “I felt we at least deserved a draw so I am disappointed for the club although it was a great effort.

“We need to dust ourselves down and go again.

“Now our focus needs to be on the league because the players have shown the level of performance they can achieve.”

Harpenden had the better of the first half with Sam Jenkins going close through two headers.

The visitors were holding their own and appeared to be heading for a replay until the finale.

It took 87 minutes before the hosts scored when Adam Kirby slotted in a cross from the far post.

Just two minutes later, with Harpenden throwing everybody forward, classy sub Jake Cass picked up a ball on the edge of the box and fired it into the corner for a 2-0 win.

It was a harsh defeat for the team but they will look to take their form into the league campaign.
