The visitors opened the scoring after just seven minutes when James Roberts netted from close range.
It was quickly 2-0 when Jefferson Louis took advantage of a misplaced pass from the hosts.
Oxford added a third goal when Reece Fleet fired home to stun the Saints.
City responded strongly though and two goals from Jamie Cureton gave them hope heading into the second half.
Oxford clinched the points midway through the second period when Louis beat the offside trap to score their fourth goal.
The Saints will hope to avenge this defeat on New Year's Day when they travel to Oxford City.
