St Albans City boss ready to make changes

St Albans City manager Steve Castle is prepared to make sweeping changes to his team after their winless start to the season dragged on.

The Saints lost 2-1 at Maidenhead United on Monday which left them with five points from their opening six games and Castle fuming by their lack of cutting edge. He acted immediately by releasing giant striker Leon Simpson and is now ready to shake up his side’s inept attack.

Castle said: "It's got to be changed up there. They've had a good opportunity. It's crying out now. We've got to get some quality up there and if it means that a few people have to go then they have to go.

"There are lads that we could have got in and they would cost money but I might just have to re-adjust things because I think we can maybe get away with younger lads in midfield or at the back but we're never going to win a game if we can't score goals. There have been too many times in games where we just looked completely impotent.

"At the front there was just a lack of desire to try and keep hold of the ball. They've been told in no uncertain terms it's got to be shaken up. If it means a couple go then so be it.

"You can't have that amount of possession and the lionshare of the play as we did in the first half and create nothing.

"The final ball and the quality in the final third is awful. That's probably one of the worst teams we've played and they have taken three points off us."

The Saints gave a debut to 17-year-old striker Chris Benjamin after he joined on work experience from Leyton Orient but they were reliant on veteran defender Mark Peters for their late consolation. Castle used the effectiveness of the makeshift forward as another example of their misfiring frontline.

"It's pretty embarrassing, let's be honest," Castle added. "He's a centre-half, 38, that just has a desire to win a game of football and win a ball in the air. I would be embarrassed by it if it was me.

"A centre half doing a centre forward's job. Unfortunately we knew it was always going to be a bit of a struggle."
