St Albans Bowling Club lost to Harrow in their long standing fixture on Saturday.

The team was understrength and the match was reduced to four triple rinks as Harrow won the match 81-62.

St Albans drew on one rink and won one. The best rink for St Albans was Trevor Ewer, Jim Cockburn and Paddy Boyle.

On Sunday St Albans shared the spoils in their four rink match, drawing 83 shots apiece.

The outstanding feature of the day was a hot shot on the 13th end for the team of Boyle, Carole Ewer, Bert Sumner and Dave Church.

Top rink of the day was Ewer, John Gardiner, Brenda Pitkin and Ted Salvidge (21-17).

In the County Competitions, Ken Budd beat Ken Woodward 21-18 in the men’s officer’s singles. Pauline Gardiner, Sylvia Cooper and Jill Morris beat Ann Mason, Ann Burnham and Sylvia Hobden 15-12 in the ladies triples.

Pitkin, Jacy Farrer and Sybil Steers lost 18-8 to Lorna Thomson, Val Thomson and Avery Hills.

Budd defeated Jim Terry 21-13 in the second round of the men’s competition.

In the men’s County Club Ten, played at Welwyn over four rinks, St Albans lost 3-1.

St Albans’ midweek men played Hemel Hempstead in a league game losing the match by 64 shots to 98. The league points scored were 30 for St Albans and 50 for Hemel Hempstead.

The top rink for St Albans was Bert Sumner, Robin Farrer, Ken Harding and Tony Rylands (22-19).

The ladies midweek match against Welwyn & District was cancelled due to the weather conditions. It was a league match and the 80 points were shared between the clubs.

The current Bowls 4 Free Courses are nearing completion. Another course is scheduled to start in June.
