Redbourn Golf Club welcomed 55 youngsters to its nine-hole Kingsbourne Course last weekend for the Regional Qualifier of the national Wee Wonders Golf Championships 2012.
With a place in the Grand Final at the home of golf, St Andrews, up for grabs in seven different categories, boys and girls aged five to 12-years-old came from far and wide to compete in the annual junior golf event.
Played over the par-three Kingsbourne Course at Redbourn, the youngsters tackled challenging holes ranging from 111 to 223 yards long with winners from each category securing their place at St Andrews.
Arron Edwards-Hill won the boys 11-12 competition with 31 and Holly Hunter won the girls 11-12 with 35. Owen Meeds scored 33 to take the boys 9-10 and Lily Cotton scored 54 to win the girls 9-10. Keirtan Sangha scored 38 to win the boys 7-8, Hugh Jacobs scored 57 to take the boys 5-6 and Grace Evans won the girls 5-8 with a score of 58.
Ian McDowell, Redbourn Golf Club general manager, said: "The Wee Wonders Championship is a wonderful format that has young people up and down the country playing and competing in golf. On behalf of everyone at Redbourn, I’d like to congratulate all of the winners, and wish them luck in the Grand Final at St Andrews next month.
"For any youngsters inspired by this weekend’s Open, the summer coaching sessions will provide children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to experience golf in a fun and friendly environment helping them learn and improve skills, which may lead, one day, to them following in the footsteps the likes of Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood."
Continuing Redbourn’s promotion of junior golf, a full schedule of summer activities is on offer at the club every week of the school holidays including three-day coaching camps and Friday fun days for youngsters between the ages of six and 14 to benefit from the expert tutelage of the club’s PGA Professionals.
Summer Golf Camps at Redbourn cost just £70 and Friday fun days are £25 with the cost including all equipment, green fees and prizes.
