Harpenden Bowling Club's men had a successful four rink friendly midweek match against Hatfield winning on three rinks.

The top rink went to Noel Roberts, Dennis Paddison, John Taylor and George Tutt who won 29-7.

Harpenden played Batchwood in a district league match and lost on three of the four rinks with the final score 45-35 to the opposition.

The winning rink for Harpenden was Trevor Rabson, Robert Macpherson, Tony Smith and John Favell.

In the district pairs competition two Harpenden teams were drawn together and the winners were Peter Hubball and John Taylor against Tony Smith and Rob Peppiatt.

John Osborn won his second round match in the London and Southern Counties Gold Badge beating Nathan Harvey of Chesham 21-17.

Nathan is the 14-year-old grandson of ex-England international Ian Harvey.

Harpenden's men won their second round match in the County Inter-Club Team Championship away at Rowley Lane. Tony Redford’s rink led from the start and won 21-12 whilst the rinks skipped by Nick Muir and David Brooks came from behind to secure a win by nine shots overall.

In the national over 55 pairs, Rick Catchpole and Dick Muir beat Johns & Lewis (Abbots Langley) 18-16.

Rick Catchpole and Colin Driscoll beat John Allan (Harperbury) 22-21 in the district pairs.

Peter Waller, Simon Burgess and Tony Redford won 17-15 against Rowley Lane in the county triples first round.

John Osborn and Redford lost 23-19 to Dave Houghton and John Godman (Townsend) in the county pairs second round. Catchpole and Colin Driscoll beat Mike Davis and Kevin Hull (Hatfield) 17-15.

Redford beat Duncan Race (North Mymms) 21-18 in the county singles third round.

Harpenden ladies national top club purple team played away at Bishop's Stortford.

They won on three rinks and lost on one to win overall. The singles and triples pulled back from losing badly to very close final scores.

The fours won with a large difference and the pairs had a close struggle throughout to triumph by three shots in the end. The team featured Lucy Ratcliffe, Beryl Birch, Val Thomson, Dena Roberts, Cynthia Williams, Janet Hubball, Jennie Redford, Linda Brooks, Linda Newby, Lesley Tutt.

A county two woods singles day was held at four venues. Lucy Ratcliffe of Harpenden was the winner at Berkhamsted.

She will now play the county semi-final at Shire Park on July 11. Ratcliffe played three games and beat Pat Pike (Hatfield), Celia Carne (Northaw and Cuffley) and Mavis Hendry (Bushey).

Ratcliffe's county triples team of Jennie Redford and Beryl Birch reached the semi finals this week with an easy 22-11 win over a team from Berkhamsted who conceded after 16 ends.

In the over 55 ladies singles Ratcliffe beat Shirley Burrows of Rowley Lane 21-20.

In the second round of the county unbadged singles, Brooks beat Val Challacombe from Welwyn & District 21-12 and Hubball beat Pam Rodgers at Potters Bar 21-16.

Meanwhile, Townsend Bowls Club eanned a victory at Shire Park in the first round of the Eversley Trophy.

Townsend won 3-0 with Alfie Long making his debut for Andrew Briden`s rink, along with Andy Scarborough and Dave Houghton, and winning by 22-15.

Jason Hall, Roger Potter, Peter Armstrong and Richard Briden were victorious 26-12 but the top rink was Peter Thomson, David Day, Gary West and team captain Danny Macro who won by 30 shots to 15.

Townsend travelled to near neighbours Clarence Park for a midweek four triples friendly which had been reduced due to competition commitments.

The result was a 4-0 win for the visitors and by 86 shots to 50. The margin of victory was largely due to the efforts of Townsend's top rink, who comprised John Oakey, Mike Haslam, and president Jean Marriott, who won 33-9.
