With Watford's scheduled opponents Arsenal due to play in the League Cup final the next day, the Hornets were without a fixture.
The date with Arsenal at Highbury had actually been brought forward and Watford had gained their customary victory over the Gunners through a Rick Holden goal the previous week.
This proved to be insufficient to stave off relegation, and Steve Harrison's side could only watch on as a win for Charlton Athletic over Newcastle United and West Ham's draw with Coventry City confirmed the end of Watford's first spell in the top flight.
