Debutant Dixie Hale scored as the season opened with a 2-1 defeat at home to Walsall.
Roy Low's replacement with Alec Farrell marked the first Watford performance to be deemed worthy of such dubious recognition; the use of of a substitute for reason other than injury was first permitted from this date in league fixtures.
