Watford beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at Vicarage Road to move to the summit of the Football League for the first time, scarcely seven years after sitting bottom of the fourth division.
Les Taylor scored one and Luther Blissett two; he had a third goal disallowed denying him what would have been his first hat-trick.
The Hornets were to remain at the summit for seven days - "That's a whole week you know," observed manager Graham Taylor in his next programme notes - whilst Blissett's long-awaited hat-trick was to follow a week later.
