Dave Bassett's Watford faced Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
Goals from Gary Porter and Worrell Sterling gave the visitors the lead before Wednesday debutant and former Watford man Colin West pulled one back, and then set up Lee Chapman's equaliser.
The visitors' winning goal was scored by much-maligned summer signing Trevor Senior, it was to be his only league goal for the Hornets.
Tim Sherwood later made his league debut as a substitute.
