A first division fixture against Aston Villa was preceded by the formal opening of the new two-tiered (later 'Rous') Stand by Elton John.
This replaced the Shrodells Stand on the west side of the ground; the demolition and construction had taken a mere 100 days over the summer break.
Watford went on to win the game 4-2, Mark Falco marking his home debut with a hat-trick.
