Watford beat Tranmere Rovers 3-2 at Vicarage Road, Paul Furlong scoring twice and Ken Charlery the other on his full debut.
The game saw full-back Nigel Gibbs return from a knee injury sustained against Notts County a month earlier, but a recurrence of the injury saw him substituted.
Gibbs would not feature for the first team again for two years, but overcame the career-threatening injury to make another 160 appearances for the club.
