Watford signed Mo Johnston from Partick Thistle for £200,000 with Graham Taylor speculating that Johnston "could be a prolific striker in two or three years".
He had already scored ten in 14 for his Scottish club that season and continued that form with 24 in 36 for the Hornets by the end of the campaign, propelling them safely into mid-table and towards their first cup final.
By the following November he was gone, returning to Scotland with Celtic with the Hornets recouping twice their original outlay.
After a spell in France with Nantes, Johnston made a controversial move to Rangers, becoming the first Roman Catholic to represent the Ibrox club for many years.
