Ikechi Anya played for the opening hour as Scotland were beaten 3-1 by England in a friendly at Celtic Park tonight.

The Watford wide man was again named in Gordon Strachan’s starting XI as the Scotland boss, apart from one enforced change due to an injury to Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher, kept faith with the same team that beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in their European Championship qualifier on Friday.

Anya offered some early promise as he initially caused Nathaniel Clyne problems, before the right-back – coupled with England taking control of the game – increasingly limited the Glasgow-born player’s impact on the contest.

Anya was replaced by Barry Bannan after an hour, but by that stage Scotland were trailing 2-0 – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deftly heading home a fine precision pass from Jack Wilshere in the first half, before England skipper Wayne Rooney made it 2-0 soon after the restart after doing well to generate enough power on a header when the ball rebounded back in his direction in the penalty area following a free-kick.

Andy Robertson offered the hosts hope late on after working a nice give-and-go with Derby County’s Jonny Russell to finish at the near post, but any hopes of a Scotland comeback were soon ended as Rooney scored his second of the evening by rounding off an impressive England move.

Anya’s Watford teammate Daniel Tozser was also on international duty tonight and he also finished on the losing side as Hungary were beaten 2-1 at home by Russia.

Tozser played the full 90 minutes as the visitors opened up a 2-0 lead through Sergei Ignashevich and Alexandr Kerzhakov, before the hosts halved the deficit late on with a Nemanja Nikolic goal.
