Hornets head coach Slavisa Jokanovic says it was Lewis McGugan’s decision to join Sheffield Wednesday on loan until January 1.

The midfielder signed with the Owls on Wednesday after making just one appearance for the Hornets since October 4.

Jokanovic admits the lack of first-team football was the reason McGugan wanted a move away from Vicarage Road.

“He wanted to go,” Jokanovic said. “We spoke about the situation and he told me clearly that he wanted to go to Sheffield Wednesday because he wasn’t playing enough minutes here.

“I said to him ok because he only played one game for me. I wish him all the best and I expect him to be back here one day with us.”

He added: “It is a good move for him and he needs more minutes on the pitch, I will expect he finds that at Sheffield Wednesday.”

The 26-year-old was a regular for the Hornets last season after moving to Vicarage Road from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2013.

However, he has found his chances limited to only six starts and one further appearance from the bench in all competitions in the current campaign.

He says he is pleased to have joined a “great club” that will give him the opportunity to play first-team football.

He told the Sheffield Wednesday website: “I’ve not played as many games as I want this season so I need to get back out there and perform. The main thing is the team and helping them progress. If I can score some goals and help add points to the board then that is great.”
