It was in Brisbane last year that Steve Finn was described by former England coach Ashley Giles as “unselectable”. Twelve months on and the Watford-born fast bowler fittingly returned to Brisbane and claimed career best figures in an England victory.

The 25-year-old was back to his best in the one-day international against India at the Gabba on Tuesday.

He is no longer plagued by the problems with his bowling action that led to a severe loss in form and confidence a year ago.

Instead his well placed deliveries came with an unmanageable bounce that unsettled India’s batsman. He ended with figures of five for 33 and walked off with the match ball in hand.

The former Parmiter’s School pupil claimed the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane (33) and then ended Virat Kohli (4) and Ambati Rayudu’s (23) innings.

India had limped to 67 for five and needed a big display from captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

However, despite a 70-run partnership with Stuart Binny, Finn’s bouncer saw Dhoni (34) dismissed and he then make it two dismissals in two balls by clipping Axar Patel’s (0) off stump.

Jimmy Anderson cleaned up the tail to help England skittle their opponents for just 153 in less than 40 overs.

England made quick work in their reply. Ian Bell (88 not out) and James Taylor (54 not out) both posted unbeaten knocks as England cruised to victory in 27.3 overs,
