Those who were at Vicarage Road on Saturday witnessed a result that had not been achieved for more than 25 years – a 5-0 Watford home league victory.

Odion Igahlo’s brace and goals from Craig Cathcart, Troy Deeney and Daniel Tozser gave the Hornets their biggest home win of the season and emulated a league result not seen at the club’s home ground since December 1989.

As our list below shows, it was only the sixth occasion Watford had recorded a 5-0 home league victory in approaching 55 years.

Watford 5 Walsall 0 (Tuesday, April 18, 1989 – Division Two)

Less than 10,000 people were at Vicarage Road to witness the Hornets’ previous 5-0 league victory at home, achieved towards the end of a nine-match unbeaten run that ultimately helped secure Steve Harrison’s side fourth in the Division Two table and a place in the play-offs, where they were beaten on away goals by Blackburn Rovers. Gary Porter scored two penalties and Garry Thompson, Paul Wilkinson and substitute Rod Thomas were also on target in the victory.

Watford 5 West Ham United 0 (Tuesday, April 2, 1985 – Division One)

Watford scored five on four occasions this season, once against Sheffield United in the FA Cup and, more memorably, twice within the space of three days against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. But this victory over the Hammers was to give them their biggest league win of the campaign. Luther Blissett led the way with two goals, while John Barnes, Les Taylor and Colin West added singles.

Watford 5 Stockport County 0 (Saturday, October 21, 1967 – Division Three)

Ken Furphy’s side were to score 59 goals at home as they went on to finish sixth in the table and five of them came against Stockport. Again the win was achieved through four different scorers – Stewart Scullion (2), Alec Farrall, Terry Garbett and Jimmy Lawton.

Watford 5 Scunthorpe United 0 (Friday, April 16, 1965 – Division Three)

Watford achieved a home-and-away Easter league double against Scunthorpe in the space of four days at the end of the 1964/65 season, claiming this emphatic home success before winning the return 2-0. Jimmy McAnerney led the way with a Good Friday hat-trick and the other two goals were shared between George Harris and Brian Owen.

Stewart Scullion netted twice in the 5-0 victory over Stockport in 1967.

Watford 5 Gateshead 0 (Saturday, April 16, 1960 – Division Four)

Big victories were not uncommon in the 1959/60 season – Watford had won 8-1 at Crystal Palace the previous September – as Cliff Holton and Dennis Uphill set about re-writing club history with their remarkable 72-goal league strike partnership. This game saw Holton complete another great feat by scoring a hat-trick for the second day running, having netted three in a 4-2 win against Chester 24 hours previously. Freddie Bunce and Tony Gregory also netted in the victory.
