Watford became the highest scoring team in the Premier League and Football League on Saturday when they came from behind to beat Leeds United 3-2 and they also achieved another notable goals statistic in the victory at Elland Road.

The Hornets have now netted 69 league goals this season – two more than Bournemouth and MK Dons – and their total after 34 matches is the highest by any Watford side since the modern-day four division structure came into existence for the 1958/59 campaign.

While another three points against Fulham tomorrow night is the priority in Watford’s ongoing promotion quest, two more goals will see the Hornets exceed their highest tally after 35 games since 1958/59. The previous best was 70, set by Graham Taylor’s Division Four title-winning side of 1977/78.

Seventeen of Watford’s 69 goals have been scored by Odion Ighalo and if the striker is involved against Kit Symons’ side, he will have the opportunity to extend one of the finest scoring sequences in the club’s history.

The 25-year-old has netted 14 in his last ten league appearances and no Watford player has matched that sequence – in terms of the quantity of goals scored in the fewest number of games – since Cliff Holton struck 15 in ten league matches in the 1959/60 season.

That campaign saw Holton net his club record 42 league goals and a look at www.watfordfcarchive.com shows that sequence was part of a longer scoring streak of 23 goals in 19 Division Four appearances from September to December 1959.

Holton's tally helped Ron Burgess' side to a club record 92 goals that season. For Slavisa Jokanovic's men to beat it, they need to score another 24 times in their remaining 12 fixtures.
