Slavisa Jokanovic insists he is not allowing himself to think about promotion to the Premier League despite Watford’s 1-0 win over Fulham moving his side to within a point of the Championship leaders Middlesbrough.

Troy Deeney’s goal tonight at Vicarage Road made it six wins out of the Hornets’ last seven games and they are now level on points with second-place Derby County, who are only ahead by one goal.

However, Jokanovic stated: “I am not thinking about it [promotion], I am thinking about the game with Wolves [on Saturday].

“I don’t know what will happen in May and I must be prepared for the game with Wolves. My desire [to get promoted] is very clear but I don’t want to spend my energy on the game with Sheffield Wednesday on May 2 [on the last day of the regular season].

“We have an important job in front of us. Fulham is history now and we must refresh our minds and our bodies to be ready for the next game.”

Watford were not at their domineering best against the Cottagers tonight and manager Kit Symons could feel slightly hard done by to return to west London empty handed.

Yet the Golden Boys again showed a resilience and desire which had arguably been lacking at times in the past.

Jokanovic said: “Fulham definitely posed us many problems but it is positive for us because we are working all together.

“It was not a brilliant game but I must be positive and optimistic when we win games like this together.

“It is good to win games 5-0 and 4-2 but sometimes it is very difficult.

“To have a champion’s mentality you must suffer together and win games like today.”

One of the criticisms of the Hornets tonight was the way they dropped deep in the final ten, 15 minutes and invited pressure from the visitors.

When asked about the issue, Jokanovic responded: “I am very happy how we are working together and how when we are in trouble we are resolving our problems together.

“Sometimes this situation happens in games and we tried to resolve this problem.

“You and I are not the only people to detect this problem and I tried to fix the problem but every game is different.

“[But] I will go home with the sense that we are suffering together and how we believed in the last moment when we were in trouble that we could still win this game and in the end we did.”
