Matej Vydra was unable to add to his international tally as a goal from a Watford-born player gave England Under-21s a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic in a friendly in Prague last night.

The Hornets striker, who has four international goals to his name at senior level and played 71 minutes in the game before being replaced, went close to giving the hosts the lead midway through the first half when his shot was cleared off the line by Tom Carroll.

And it was the Watford-born Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, who is currently on loan with Swansea City, who scored what proved to be the winner three minutes after the restart when he slotted home after Czech goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka fumbled a Calum Chambers cross.

Gareth Southgate’s side had chances to add to the scoreline late on as Jesse Lingard had a shot pushed behind by Pavlenka and, from the resulting corner, another second-half replacement, John Stones, forced another good stop out of the keeper with a header.

Hornets shot-stopper Jonathan Bond was the only England substitute not to get some game time in the victory, but he will hope that changes when Southgate's side host Germany at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on Monday.
