Quique Sanchez Flores says he doesn’t know if Matej Vydra will stay at Watford but says his relationship with the striker is “amazing”.

The Czech Republic international was an unused substitute during the Hornets’ first two Premier League fixtures but he was omitted from the matchday squad entirely against Southampton today.

Flores faced the media after the goalless draw and Vydra’s absence was the primary topic of conversation.

While Watford’s head coach stressed there has been no decision made as to whether the 23-year-old will leave the club before the transfer window closes, he wasn’t able to guarantee Vydra will remain at Vicarage Road.

“I don’t know what Vydra’s future is,” he said. “He could be at Watford or he could be at another team. I am not ready to decide anything now.

“At this moment it is impossible to know Vydra’s future. It depends on the club. It depends on the player and it depends on what kind of player is coming in during the week.”

Flores added: “Vydra is an amazing guy. There is no reason to have doubts about Vydra. My relationship with Vydra is amazing and his relationship with the rest of the squad is amazing.”

Whether or not Vydra is sold before the transfer window closes is not solely Flores’ decision. Watford have a committee who discuss transfers and they will have to make several difficult choices in the next ten days.

Flores was asked if Vydra could be sold. Unsurprisingly he admitted he didn’t know.

“It is not my business to talk about offers,” the Spaniard said. “We are talking and working like a team. The qualities that we need if we want to improve is very clear.

“But talking about players is not fair. I don’t want to talk about players who could then be in the squad. We are not in a hurry to make decisions.

“Every day we are checking and we have one more week to make the decisions of who will be in our final squad.”

Fernando Forestieri was named on the Watford substitutes’ bench this afternoon despite Leeds United reportedly agreeing a fee with the Hornets for the attacking midfielder.

The 25-year-old was an unused, though, and Flores was asked why he’d decided to select Forestieri in the matchday squad ahead of Vydra.

He replied: “We have a lot of players who are not on the list. We are training with 30 players every week and that is not easy.

“Of course we are trying to put the best players on the list. Sometimes it will be Vydra, sometimes Forestieri, sometimes (Almen) Abdi and sometimes it will be (Miguel) Layun.

“We have a lot of offensive players and it is sometimes difficult to change things because other players are playing well.

“It is not easy to take out (Odion) Ighalo or (Jose Manuel) Jurado. Ighalo has scored a goal and Jurado is making the difference. So isn’t easy to improve the players who are already on the pitch.”
