Hornets skipper Troy Deeney says he will be having a word with Juan Carlos Paredes over the full-back’s theatrics during Watford’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea but admits overdramatising contact is a part of “new age football”.

Paredes was involved in an incident with Diego Costa shortly before half time of last night’s contest.

The Ecuadorian first barged into the back of the Chelsea striker - who made the most of the collision - before Costa got to his feet and moments later pushed Paredes to the ground.

The Hornets defender, disappointingly, went down holding his face despite Costa making contact with his back. Both players were booked for their actions.

Deeney was asked after the game for his view on the incident. His response was nothing less than Watford fans have come to expect from their skipper.

“It’s new age football, isn’t it?,” he told BT Sport. “There is a little touch and everyone goes rolling around.

"My personal opinion is the referee had spoken to him (Costa) previously so if he was speaking to him again surely it was a yellow card. That’s all I was saying.

“It was just handbags between everyone. It’s modern day football. I remember playing Sunday league and that wouldn’t have happened. Everyone would’ve got laughed at.

“It’s the age we live in. Everyone pushes and rolls around to try and get the other guy sent off.

"I don’t like it personally and I will be having a word with Paredes on our side.”
