Watford midfielder Adlene Guedioura admits he is disappointed at his lack of football during the club’s Premier League campaign and does not want this to happen again next season.

Guedioura helped the Hornets win promotion during his loan spell from Crystal Palace last season.

The Algeria international signed a three-year deal to move permanently to Vicarage Road last summer.

But he had to wait until January for his first start of the season in their FA Cup win over Newcastle.

His two league starts did not come until April and the midfielder admits he did not expect his involvement to be so restricted after his permanent move at the start of this season.

Guedioura said: “If I talk about it personally it was not the season I was expecting at all. I’m a bit disappointed about not playing that much because I think I could have played more.

“You have to learn and to understand things but I don’t want this happening next season. It depends what’s going to happen next season but I really want to play more and have more game time because I was not happy at all with this season.”

The 30-year-old missed the club’s pre-season tour and this made it harder for the midfielder to break into the side especially with Watford impressing during the first half of the campaign.

“It’s not easy [being in and out of team],” he said. “I didn’t expect that. When I came here it was not something I was ready for to be honest. When I came here I had to work hard and it’s not that I didn’t deserve to play or anything.

“It’s just the team was doing well and I had to understand there was a new manager and everything so I couldn’t play.”

Guedioura added: “I didn’t do the pre-season tour and I think this cost me a little bit. But I think I showed I could have played more sometimes and to have some games in a different time of the year.

“When I had the chance I think I did well but this was not enough even for me. I want to do well in a run of games and show that I can help the team as much as I can.”

Watford Observer:

The majority of Watford’s fans have supported Guedioura and underlined their backing for the player after booing the decision by Quique Sanchez Flores to substitute him during his first league start at West Brom last month.

The former Nottingham Forest midfielder appreciates the fans’ support and believes he can repay their faith in him if he gets a run of starts next season.

He said: “I think it’s important [fans’ support] and I really thank them for that. They know what I can do if I had more time and more games under my belt. It’s not just one or two games that you can show your quality.

“You need to be have three or four matches in a row to play your part I would say. It was really important they did that for me and I really thank them for that.

“There are still a few games to go and hopefully next season I will have a good run and will show them again what I can do for a long run of games.”

Guedioura will hope to feature on Sunday when the Hornets travel to Anfield to face Liverpool.

Watford enjoyed one of their best wins of the season after beating Jurgen Klopp’s side 3-0 in December and the midfielder expects their opponents to be hungry to avenge this defeat.

Guedioura said: “I played there [Anfield] before with Wolves. I don’t remember the score. I think we lost 2-1 but it was a great atmosphere.

“Anfield is a historic stadium and club so it will be difficult to go there and play because I still think about the game at home that we won as well.”

He added: “I think they will want revenge and want to get high in the table to get into Europe so it’s going to be a hard game.

"We have to prepare well to go there and do something.”

It will be the first chance for many of the Hornets’ players to compete at Anfield and Geudioura expects them to make the most of the occasion.

He said: “I think many players in the Watford team have never played there so it’s going to be something special for them as well. We can’t wait for this game and go there and enjoy the moment with a win or a good game.”
