Watford started brightly in Quique Sanchez Flores’ farewell match. But the hosts failed to turn their possession and early efforts into the breakthrough.

Sam Allardyce’s side opened the scoring against the run of play when Jack Rodwell tapped in at the far post.

The Hornets responded after the break and Sebastian Prodl powered his header home for the equaliser.

It did not last long though as within three minutes Sunderland reclaimed the lead through Jeremain Lens’ finish.

The visitors conceded a penalty on the hour mark and Troy Deeney confidently converted to level the game and secure a point as Watford finished 13th in the Premier League.

But how did the Hornets fare individually during yesterday's final match of the campaign at Vicarage Road?

Heurelho Gomes – 6.5: The Hornets goalkeeper did well to save from Jeremain Lens. But Gomes could do nothing about Sunderland’s opener straight afterwards when Jack Rodwell tapped home from close range.

Gomes was not particularly busy in the second half after the visitors added their second goal but made a decent block to deny Duncan Watmore late on.

Craig Cathcart - 5.5: Played out of his favoured position after starting at right-back and was occasionally exposed defensively.

Produced a nice touch to set up Jose Manuel Jurado in the first half. The Northern Ireland international was taken off at half-time.

Miguel Britos - 6: The centre-back did well to turn Duncan Watmore’s cross over his own bar.

Recovered well in the second half to prevent Dame N’Doye getting a shot in on goal. But the centre-back was occasionally loose in possession.

Sebastian Prodl – 7: The defender did well to deny Dame N’Doye after the forward broke away towards the end of the half.

Prodl equalised for the Hornets after the break when he sent his powerful header past Jordan Pickford.

Nathan Ake – 6: The Chelsea loanee was prepared to get forward during the first half on occasions.

Fired in a low strike before half-time which was kept out by a save from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

But the defender was caught out for Sunderland’s second goal as Jeremain Lens was given too much space to score.

Ake almost grabbed an equaliser but his fierce strike was tipped over the bar by Pickford.

Almen Abdi – 7: The midfielder almost gave the Hornets an early lead but fired his strike just wide.

Heavily involved in Watford’s attacks and looked a threat cutting in from the right. Fired in several efforts during the first half.

Abdi was the hosts' most creative midfielder and his performance suggests he still has a significant role to play next season.

Ben Watson - 6.5: Neat and tidy in possession. Watson rarely gave away the ball cheaply.

The midfielder was quietly effective in his holding role as he enabled the other players to get forward.

Adlene Guedioura – 6: Relatively quiet first half but produced an excellent delivery from his corner for Sebastian Prodl’s equaliser in the second period.

A rare start for the midfielder and he did not influence the game enough to suggest he should have been a regular in the side.

Jose Manuel Jurado – 6.5: The Spaniard looked sharp in possession and produced a cheeky backheel in the first half.

Jurado won the penalty for Watford's second equaliser when he was fouled by John O'Shea.

As has often been the case, Jurado offered plenty of potential but his end product did not materialise frequently enough.

Troy Deeney – 7: Looked lively early on and involved in some neat interplay with Odion Ighalo.

The Watford skipper confidently fired home his penalty for the side’s second equaliser of the game.

His exceptional work ethic and selfless contribution to the team during the game earned renewed calls from home fans for an England call-up.

Odion Ighalo - 6: Combined well with Troy Deeney and the striker chipped wide early on.

Ighalo looked lively and was lifted by his midweek goal at Norwich but could not find the finishing touch with his efforts.

Substitutes

Juan Carlos Paredes (for Craig Cathcart, HT) – 5.5: Allowed Duncan Watmore too much space on the break for the visitors’ second goal.

Mario Suarez (for Almen Abdi, 66) – 5.5: The midfielder did not have a major involvement but was reasonably reliable in possession. His touch was heavy late on when the ball fell to him on the edge of the area.

Nordin Amrabat (for Jose Manuel Jurado, 79) – 5.5: Did not have long to impress and one back flick failed to pay off as he gave away possession.
