Watford midfielder Ben Watson has agreed a one-year contract extension at Vicarage Road.

The 30-year-old made 41 appearances last season for the Hornets including playing 35 games in the Premier League as the side finished in 13th place.

Watson is currently halfway through a two-year contract and his additional year will keep him at the club until 2018.

The former Wigan Athletic midfielder joined Watford midway through last season and helped the side win promotion from the Championship.

Watson featured regularly under Quique Sanchez Flores and he was delighted with the way the season panned out for him.

He said: “Without a doubt [personally pleased]. I think if someone had told me at the start of the season I would play 40 games this year I would have probably laughed at them.

"To be able to play that many I had to be patient at the start of the season. But then I got my chance and I played in pretty much every game from then so on a personal level it’s been fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the break now and recharging the batteries for next season."
