Walter Mazzarri admits Isaac Success was less effective in his first start for Watford compared to his contributions from off the bench but expects the attacker to improve with time.
Success has produced a series of impressive cameos as a substitute this season but was handed an opportunity from the start in Sunday's 1-0 win at Middlesbrough.
The powerful Nigerian, playing in a role down the left, won a number of free-kicks and produced a decent late effort in the second half.
But despite winning the man-of-the-match, according to some media outlets, Success failed to make a major impact in the game.
Head coach Mazzarri said: “He [Success] played well, as did the whole team, but he did much better in the other games when he came on from the bench.
"It’s not easy to start a game. It’s completely different but if he gets his full condition then he also needs to learn some things and he will be a great player."
