Hornets end run of defeats with victory over Ipswich Town

Malky Mackay’s decision to promote Will Hoskins from the bench paid off as Watford ended their losing run with a battling 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Vicarage Road.

Hoskins was given the nod over Danny Graham in the only change from Saturday’s disappointing 1-0 reverse to Peterborough United, and the former Rotherham United striker fired home the winner from 15 yards with 14 minutes remaining.

Earlier, Henri Lansbury had capped a good start by the Hornets with an early opener, before Jack Colback equalised mid-way through the second period.

Watford’s first win in five also ensured they maintained their Indian sign over the Tractor Boys, who have now not one any of their last 11 meetings between the two clubs in all competitions.

Watford had a chance inside the opening 90 seconds when a Don Cowie free-kick from 30 yards out hit the bar and then Heidar Helguson’s close-range header was blocked by a defender.

But the home crowd didn’t have to wait long for the opener as Watford scored for the first time in more than four-and-a-half hours.

A free-kick was awarded in the almost identical spot from where Cowie’s was taken and Lansbury whipped in the ball with pace and it missed everyone as it bounced into the top corner.

Ipswich’s first chance came on 13 minutes as a Colback corner was headed wide by the returning Grant Leadbitter, who had missed the previous two games through suspension.

The home fans’ spirits were lifted further when Lloyd Doyley beat his man wide left and sent in a cross with his weaker foot but Helguson’s header struck the far post and rebounded wide.

Watford were on top in the opening period and had two more chances in quick succession.

First, Helguson had a half volley from 25 yards saved by Brian Murphy and then minutes later Hoskins pulled the ball out of the air inside the 18-yard box and forced the keeper into another save from a tight angle.

The visitors had an opportunity within 20 seconds off the restart when Wickham broke free into the right side of the area and squared across the six-yard box but Colback could only scuff his attempt wide at the far post.

The temperature was further increased in the 50th minute when John Eustace caught an opponent with a late challenge. He was immediately surrounded by around half-a-dozen incensed Ipswich players, including Jon Walters, who grabbed Helguson round the neck and pulled him away. However, the end result was that Eustace escaped with a yellow card and, strangely, referee Graham Salisbury decided no other players needed punishing.

But the Hornets went close to scoring again in the 65th minute when Tom Cleverley worked a short corner routine with Cowie before opening up the angle and striking a fine right-footed curling shot that looked to be destined for the far corner before it was cleared from in front of Brian Murphy.

However, Ipswich were soon back on the attack, winning a corner which Wickham flicked on at the near post, forcing Loach to tip over. But the visitors made no mistake from the resultant set piece.

This time the corner was worked short, Shane O’Connor had plenty of time to deliver the ball towards the far post and, although Loach again did well to save the initial effort, he was helpless as Colback slammed home the rebound to make it 1-1 in the 68th minute.

Mackay’s response to the equaliser was to bring on Graham for Helguson four minutes later and four minutes after that the change, with a degree of good fortune, paid off.

Cleverley lifted the ball into the area from the right, the ball struck Graham and fell for Hoskins to swivel and strike a low right-footed shot to put the Hornets back in front.

However, the goal scorer immediately went down suffering with cramp and, although he tried to run it off, he had to be replaced by Ross Jenkins on 80 minutes. Before that though, Roy Keane had made a double change, with Pablo Counago and David Healy coming on for O’Connor and Daryl Murphy.

Jon Harley then replaced Lansbury for the last five minutes of normal time, but the substitute and his team-mates were able to safely negotiate what turned out to be ten more minutes of play to celebrate the end of a disappointing run.

Watford: Loach; Mariappa, DeMerit, Taylor, Doyley; Cowie, Eustace, Lansbury (Harley, 85), Cleverley; Hoskins (Jenkins, 80), Helguson (Graham, 72). Not used: McGinn, Lee, Buckley and Hodson.

Ipswich Town; B Murphy; Rosenior, Delaney, McAuley, O'Connor (Healy, 76); Walters, Leadbitter, Garvan (Martin, 23), Colback; D Murphy (Counago, 76), Wickham. Not used: Norris, Edwards, Lee-Barrett and Smith.

Bookings: Eustace for a foul after 50 mins.

Attendance: 13,996.

Referee: Graham Salisbury.

A much needed battling win, but taking in to account our league position and future fixtures, nothing less than a win would have been good enough tonight. For me, the jury is still out on the current management team.

Before all the whingers get on, this was a great battling performance with a lot of good chances created. A vital 3 points with the crowd really getting behind the team. Good night all round.

Credit where it's due. A much better performance from the team and the crowd. However, that must now continue into the next 2 away games and the then the rest of the season. In my opinion we must win one of our next 2 away games, not to ease any fears of relagtion but because the away form is the real test of MM management - what has he learnt from the last 12 away defeats/draws? Finally he played Hoskins from the start - and guess what? he scored!! Now that doesn't make him the best striker in the world or anything but i do think it justifies the fact that me and many others have been telling MM to do this for at least a month. I think this slowness of decision by MM is what he really needs to improve on and hopefully tonights game was the start of it. A vast improvement on recent weeks, a good performance, great result but of course the jury must still be out on MM for the time being.

A much better display and now crucially we have some breathing space - but not much.

Hoskins was excellent and i think his time has at last come. How ironic that one of Boothroyds signings might well become our saviour. He was head and shoulders above H i'm afraid.

But before the happy clappers get carried away this is only 1 win 5, and we now have two tough away games coming up. Whether we like it or not, we are in a relegation battle, and as far as i'm concerned, the team has significantly underachieved under the current management set up.

At the very least the board must look to support Mackay by bringing in an experienced assistant, if not now, then certainly next season .

Hornofplenty says...
11:09pm Tue 16 Mar 10

Finally Hoskins starts - speed of thought and speed of action makes a difference and as pointed out earlier this is what MM needs to learn from this. Let's hope he does.
I'm worried by the people who would have been happy with 4th from bottom at the start of the season cos no WFC fans I know would have accepted that now or then! If you aim for the moon you'll never reach the stars!

Jeepers, creepers.
I seem to remember a lifetime ago, or maybe last summer, that Mr. Integrity left us for the Thames Valley Traders, as he had always intended to. He then set about trying to steal our players, as he knew the financial mire we were in. Players left us for all sorts of clubs as others took advantage. The board has been through all sorts of upheaval, and we've been hours away from administration. Through all of this, Malky and his team have managed to identify really good quality loan signings, integrate them into the squad and get some great performances from the youngsters and others alongside them. If it's not enough for you that we're hanging on in this division, then perhaps you need to take a reality check. Or go somewhere else.

That stunningly brilliant Lloydinio turn and cross onto H's head which hit the bar in the first half was the best moment for me. Top class entertainment. Mr Doyley was pretty good all game apart from his trademark crap passing every now and again. Just relieved to get the 3 points in the end.
Interestingly Alan Curbishley was in the Directors box for the 3rd game in a row.

garston edl says...

a vastly improved performance, it was hard to believe we were watching the same team (Hoskins apart) that was so poor on Saturday.
We looked well up for it from the first whistle, our much-maligned back four were outstanding, midfield creative & industrious, forwards lively and dangerous, we must have had more efforts on goal than the previous four games put together, if only we had played like that on Saturday.
Apart from the win it showed that the players still have the stomach for the fight & that MM has not lost the dressing room as some have suggested.
Now imperative we take something from two tough away games!!

The team turned up to play tonight, so much better than the weekend.

As for the headlines, Hoskins in for Graham worked??? I thought Graham coming on made the goal for Hoskins!!

have serious doubts about Heidars ability to play two games a week...maybe we should let him come on second half only as opposition tires.

Much improved performance, and all credit to the lads for not buckling when Ipswich scored. Thanks, Malky, for the one change that you did make, but what about the other: Hodson for Mariappa? AM's first two contributions last night were a missed tackle and a pass into the East Stand. However, his and the team's confidence improved once we'd gone ahead. But Hodson is the more creative player, works better with Cowie, and we've now got Taylor to cover for his lack of height at the back.

Let's hope it's the relaxed, purposeful team that turns up on Sunday. COYH!

I'll be reserving judgement on MM abilities until after the next 2 away games, I expect most everyone who is praising him today will be damning him if he doe not get at least 1 point from these two games. Hoskins cramp, lines him up not to get played on Saturday - so let's wait and see. Need to watch Loach as well, I hope all this talk of being 'england's under 12 keeper' isn't going to his head like it did with foster. He's good but has made some basic errors in the last few games. He needs to get back to basics and do the things he was doing right earlier in the season. 2 difficult games coming up. 2 draws would be a start or one win and one loss. 2 - 3 points might hold us in 19th just. Bet Eustace's tackle bought a tear of rememberance back to Keano's eye :)

But we got a win unfortunately so did everyone else. Crowd was poor but i guess thats because chelsea were playing..... mariappa still a liability and helguson must be considering retirement. cowie is the winner of the player who has gone backwards quickest, malkys special touch me thinks. loach had his normal game and so did demerit. thank god he holds this team together, shame he wants to leave though. malkys special touch works again

Scunthorpe didn't play but it will be a miracle if they get anything out of Newcastle tonight
Crystal Palace lost
Sheffield Wednesday drew
Of the teams immiediately above us -

QPR lost

So that makes about as much sense as your comment about demerit holding the team together. The only player doing anything to rouse the team is Eustace and he should be given the armband.

Why would Reading - five points ahead of us - represent a 'threat' to our Championship status? The 'random' teams quoted are those immediately below/above us in the league. Would you like someone to explain how the league system works?

Good post - Eustace takes unjustified stick here on here, in particular for lobbing the ball forward, but in the main 'cos of the lack of options ahead, behind or sideways.
I agree give him the armband as he was cajoling players indicating last minute CONCENTRATE! Where was Jay apart from fluffing clearances & repeatedly ducking under balls WTF is that all about?!

Vastly improved performance last night, and yes the lads put in a good shift. At last some positives to take from an enjoyable game!

Anything from Sunday is a bonus, a point is a must at Wednesday...if we play like we did last night as opposed to v Posh, a point is definitely achievable.

We need to take the points against those we should and one other inspired performance against a higher placed team should see us safe.

Would like to have seen Buckley get 15-20 mins in place of Cowie, thought that was set up with DC playing left side for most of the game.

luther67 says...
3:21pm Wed 17 Mar 10

Describing Eustace as 'useless' doesn't show a particularly reasoned knowledge of the game either. He may not be the greatest midfielder we've ever had, and that little lob ball over the top is a bit over-used, but he works hard for the team and often has a very positive impact on the game.
Some of the criticism on here is unbelievable. People talk about Malky changing the team as if we have some big talented squad at our disposal, everyone gets over-excited about Hoskings because he scores a hat-trick in a reserve match against Southend. Lloyd Doyley is a legend when we win and useless when we lose. You wonder how old many of the posters on this board actually are. With a lot of them there seems to be no sensible appreciation of Watford's financial position at all.

If someone goes off with cramp it doesnt mean he does not train hard enough, he run for the full 80 mins, maybe he was not dehydrated enough, lack of fluid causes cramp aswel as Over-exertion of muscles and Dehydration.

Yes, well said, indeed, Luther. What I find so bizarre is how so many posters on this site can be “undecided” about Mackay and Dyche. Have they forgotten that we sold off most of our decent players in August and have had little or no money to replace them since? The fact that we haven’t been in the bottom 3 all season and, in fact, have enjoyed enough success to have flirted with the play offs is a testament to the excellent work done by the management. Added to which, the standard of play has been the best seen at Vicarage Road for many, many years. Regardless of what happens between now and the rest of the season, Mackay and Dyche have done an excellent job.

Loach - will be sold
Doyley - has mugged a career in football

Eustace - will get hounded out by idiots who know nothing about football

Don't worry too much about next year because loan players are very much the norm today. Last night QPR had six loan players and might have had seven (but there is apparently a limit). Chris the Vic says...
9:01am Thu 18 Mar 10

ab11uk i think you are being a bit harsh and need to reflect over the full season.

John Eustace has until recently played well, his effort is right up there, his passing is a weakness and his recent side footed lobs forward a waste of time but he has at times kept the team going and is the obvious skipper. Jay has returned to a successful team, tends to display a complete blame culture when he messes up and has orchestrated a massive loss of form. Pray he takes his current form into the world cup.

Due to a reduced squad we have Lloyd, Mariappa and Cowie playing out of position and doing their best. Others including the loanees are there giving of their best and so is our management team.

When we sold Lee, Tommy, Willo and Jibi we knew it was going to be tough and Severin's lack of form was not helpful but overall we still have a good chance of survival. So not a bad season when we started it was almost a choice of which came first Administration or relegation, now we appear to be in an improved state and have a future.

As for your comments on Hoskins..i dont disagree...he needs to reflect on what he wants...but a good level of fitness would at least assist...he like O'Toole needs to get himself sorted

Malky has got to be judged against the season as a whole. I just hope that the players he's shown faith in continue repay him the way they did against Ipswich. Is Hoskins going to step up to the mark at last? I sure hope so.

Well said hurlsburls.
Hugely valuable win and well deserved.
Some of this refs have made some amazing decisions. Let me stress that I like Eustace and appreciate his 100% efforts but having seen his tackle again it appeared to be MUCH worse than Tom Cleverleys a few weeks ago and yet he gets a yellow (thankfully) and Cleverly got a red.
Isnt all becoming something of a lottery??Am I wrong???

"no nothing"?? Dear me, another product of our failing state education system, no doubt
Very predictable Plum. As soon as i read my comment back and noticed the mistake i was waiting for you to comment on it! Anyway, let's stick to football and not change the subject - please explain why you think MM has done "an excellent job"?

Maybe, he like most reasonably minded fans think that MM has done an excellent job despite all the major issues he has had to face with no control over. Such as:

A huge financial problem not of his making, which resulted in all of his best players being sold above his head.

No funds to replace the players sold.

Massive board room unrest and in-fighting, resulting in the club being hours from administration and a 10 point deduction.

Added to the fact this is first ever management job I'd say he's done a far better job than any of the 'Champ Manager' computer trained expert posters on this site.

He's got the team playing an entertaining, attacking brand of football despite having to play on a ploughed field(and with no budget). So yes I think its fair to say he's done an excellent job.

Or should I be screaming for a highly paid premiership experienced replacement, who can build a highly talented expensive side funded on the never, never which will ultimately leave the club in the high court fighting a winding up order.

Sorry people but reality often isn't pleasant, but these are times in which we have to be brutally realistic. It is far better to cut costs and survive than to be stupidly ambitious and destroy the club.

Rant over, have a nice day.

Heard the admin, ploughed pitch, sold some players argument before Scott. Not really good enough to back up claims of MM's excellence though. You need to raise your standards if you think 19th place and no away wins in 12 (including some very unattractive football - i was at 10 of them!) is excellent. Not to mention his ridiculous stubborness over Hoskins. His done some things well and some things very badly.

"His done some things well".
Your spelling is appalling. You'll need to improve if you're going to pass your GCSE.

Grow up. 2 A's in English. A simple mistake when typing quickly on a football message board! Concentrate less on the odd spelling mistake and more on explaining why MM has done an excellent job! As for enlightened one - i know nothing about supporting Watford? - did you miss the my comment that i've been to 10 of the 12 away games? Too busy looking for spelling mistakes?

As Enlightened One said, you obviously have no idea what supporting Watford is all about.
You are a glory hunter and do not have the mental fortitude to support the team through the bad times. No doubt you you have no idea as to why Hoskins has not been playing. I guess you'd have been playing Hoskins despite his sh!te attitude and lack of work ethic. Yeah, that'll work. No doubt you are choosing to ignore the facts and belong to the unrealistic "fan" who'd rather risk everything for a quick but unsustainable fix.

I give up! Do you read my posts?! I've been to 10 of the last 12 away games. How does that make me a "glory hunter"? Who the hell are you to judge my mental fortitude? I have been supporting this club through thick and mainly thin since approx 1991. I am a proud and passionate Watford fan, i simply just don't have the same opinion on the management team at the moment as you do.
