Watford boss happy after Stevenage showing

Malky Mackay felt his Watford side rediscovered their form last night as their pre-season campaign got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Stevenage.

Having been made to work hard during the first third of the match at the League Two newcomers, the Hornets gradually took charge towards the end of the first half and built on this after the break to run out winners with goals from Stephen McGinn and Marvin Sordell.

“That’s back to what I’ve been watching in pre-season in training every day,” a satisfied Hornets boss said afterwards.

“I think we were clear in the way we were going to play tonight and I think, through patience and hard work, we then picked our passes and opened them up at certain points.

“I was delighted with some of the younger ones and also the fact some of the experienced ones, who I watched at Coventry and the last day of the season and saw how good they are, were back to that again tonight.”

The clean sheet was in marked contrast to the Hornets’ error-strewn defensive display at Northampton Town three days previously when the visitors were arguably fortunate to escape with a 3-3 draw.

Asked about the improvement at the back, in contrast to the display at Sixfields, Mackay responded: “I think it’s your personal pride, personal performance, the way you approach the game and they came here tonight knowing they were going to be in for a game and that’s what we should have done against Northampton.

“But I think tonight it was back to what I’ve been watching every day in pre-season. They can feel it in there themselves. At half-time they felt it. I said to them ‘how do you feel?’ And they were ‘this is good’ and if we keep working like this the openings will happen and you saw the space that opened up in the second half only through the hard work of the first half and that’s vital. You do the basics properly then the openings well appear.

“I thought Danny Graham again was magnificent tonight and young Marvin Sordell looked like a man up front next to him and caused countless problems.”

Glad Sordell did well but hope this doesn't doesn't tempt the board to shelve potential signings. btw players at open day said Lewis Young has a one year contract at Burton Albion...nice lad, great attitude pleased he's been able to stay in League.

What pathetic dribble. This is a side who, in all likelihood, will be playing outside the football leage again next season.

When i see some of the players other championship clubs are bringing in - some of whom are in a more vulnerable position than us - then i do really start to lose faith.

The squad, as it currently stands, is at best a lower league 1 team. We only survived relegation last season thanks to the loan players.

Our movement in the market in the last 12 months, in terms of the permanent signings we have made, has been been pitiful. As i said the other day, it looks like we could well end September rooted firmly in the bottom 3.

If Mackay has seen any positives in this cheap farce of a pre-season, then he really is more deluded than i thought.

I am now very very worried......
another player who would do a job,got away today....Kevin Lisbie went to Millwall on loan for season, bet he scores against us!!
Why are we doing nothing? or if we are,why are we being told nothing?
The quality of opposition we have played, and to an extent, struggled against, has been pretty poor,if we agree friendlies dont matter, then praising our performance against poor opposition shouldnt happen either!!
Its true other championship sides are struggling as well, but most of them are in a position to strengthen or they have bigger squads than us.
Does anyone actually think this squad is good enough?
Hull proved the other season in the premier, that a good start can keep you up!!!
I hope we dont regret the lack of new players!!

I think its going to be about confidence. If we can pick up some points in the first few games we'll be able to kick-on. some of the youngsters can play but they are quite fragile. If the first 3 or 4 results go against them then I think we will be in a bit of bother.

It was quite interesting to see some of the younger regulars last night look assured in comparison with the real newbies. The likes of Jenkins, Hodgson, Marriappa just showed their experience on a number of occations whereas Sordell, Mingoia (im sure thats not right) Wichelow looked 'green' and generally light weight - in every sense.

We're gonna need to steer clear of injuries and try and biuld a bit of momentum but we are undoughtedly short of quality and a few new faces would certainly help the supporters develope a bit of belief.

I am quite excited about having a team where a good proportion are local lads and others 'home grown' through the academy.

Lets keep the faith and hope we get off to a decent start in the first few games.

I keep saying it, but if the fans give 90 minutes of support in the way they want the players to give 90 minutes on the park, then the belief and confidence is boosted. If the fans grumble and boo the youngsters, then some heads will drop. Heck, it even happens with experienced players. (rooney and co)

Get behind em for the full 90 and they will win
