Watford without former Birmingham City defender for Charlton Athletic match

Watford are without Martin Taylor for their final pre-season game against Charlton Athletic at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

The centre-half is ruled out with a minor knock, so Tom Aldred comes in to partner Adrian Mariappa in the heart of the defence.

The only other change from the starting line-up that beat Stevenage 2-0 on Tuesday sees the fit-again Will Buckley replace Piero Mingoia.

There is one surprise on the bench, with Michael Bryan fit to be included even though the firm expectation was that an ankle injury would keep him on the sidelines.

The visitors were busy in the transfer market yesterday, bringing in striker Pawel Abbott from Oldham Athletic and right-back Simon Francis from Southend United and the latter is among their substitutes.

Phil Parkinson does include former Hornets loanee Johnnie Jackson, who has joined from Notts County this summer, while they boast a very experienced centre-half pairing in the shape of former Scotland international Christian Dailly and ex-Norwich City skipper Gary Doherty.

Charlton’s pre-season, much like their opponents, has been relatively low key, although they share one thing in common with Watford, having also suffered a 1-0 defeat at Barnet.

However, they got back on track with a 2-0 win at Bromley last time out and, prior to the Underhill game, had been victorious at Bedford Town (2-1), Kettering Town (4-0) and Welling United (1-0), having started their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

Watford: Loach; Hodson, Mariappa, Aldred, Doyley; Cowie, Eustace, McGinn, Buckley; Sordell, Graham. Substitutes: Oshodi, Gilmartin, Jenkins, Mingoia, Bryan, Whichelow, Henderson.

Charlton Athletic: Elliot, Solly, Dailly, Doherty, Jackson; Wagstaff, McCormack, Semedo, Racon, Reid; Sodje. Substitutes: Abbott, Stavrinou, Marshall, Llera, Mambo, Fortune, Bauza.
