Marvin Sordell's agent has strongly denied claims by Watford owner Laurence Bassini that he said the striker would run down his contract with the Hornets.
Watford’s owner released a statement the day after Sordell joined Bolton Wanderers claiming the striker had been affected by “external influences”.
Bassini claimed Sordell’s agent had rejected a new contract on behalf of the player, which would double Sordell’s wages, and that his agent, Sky Andrew, said the contract would not be considered and that the 20-year-old would see out the remainder of his current deal if he wasn’t sold.
This was strongly denied by Andrew, whose client list includes QPR striker Jay Bothroyd, Stoke City winger Jermaine Pennant and England fast bowler James Anderson.
“Normally I wouldn’t comment on such matters but it is important for the fans to know the facts,” Andrew said.
“First and foremost, it is important to state that Ross Wilson and Sean Dyche were outstanding in the way they dealt with the whole situation.
“The manager was particularly gracious and Marvin appreciated the way the manager treated him.
“The second thing which needs to be said is that neither Marvin or myself had looked to leave the club.”
The Watford Observer understands the Hornets made other clubs aware of Sordell and Adrian Mariappa’s availability through a well-respected sports agency last week.
This prompted a bid from Cardiff City for Sordell and we understand the Welsh club had initially been told they had permission to talk to the player following a £3m bid, which included further add-ons, only for the Hornets to state they needed time to reconsider.
Cardiff manager Malky Mackay did not name which player he was talking about but he did tell the Welsh press: “We had a bid accepted for one player and than half-an-hour after things changed.”
Bassini said recent history between Watford and Cardiff meant the chances of striking a deal were “remote”.
Bolton came in for the striker on Tuesday afternoon and Bassini decided to withdraw Sordell from the squad to face Millwall.
In Bassini’s 270-word statement on the club’s website, he claimed: “Unfortunately, you cannot protect your own players from external and third-party influences when it comes to what might be best for their future career.
“We made an offer to double Marvin’s wages, however his agent advised that this wouldn’t be considered and that they’d simply let his contract run down.
“Then we’d have been in a vulnerable position as regards compensation amounts – so it becomes more about doing what’s best for Watford FC at that exact moment.
“I discussed the matter with Graham Taylor (chairman) and we agreed that selling Marvin was in the best interests of the football club, given the circumstances.”
However, when Sordell’s agent was asked if he said the player would not consider the new contract offer, Andrew stated: “That is not the case.
“We put it in writing to the club that we would consider the offer until the deadline we were given (February 1).”
And on Bassini’s claims that Andrew said Sordell would “simply let his contract run down”, the former Olympian replied: “No, I didn’t say he would run the contract down.”
Andrew added: “Marvin was given a contract offer and was given a time frame to consider it (until February 1) and we wrote to the club saying he would consider it.And before that time was up, the club decided to sell him.”
Sordell joined Bolton on a deal which we understand could eventually reach more than £3.5m, however Andrew stressed it was not a simple decision for the youngster, who joined Watford after being released by Fulham.
Andrew said: “It is a massive wrench for players like Marvin to leave a club when you have a good relationship with the manager and are being looked after by people like Sean Dyche and Ross Wilson (Watford’s head of football business).
“But if the club say they have accepted an offer from a Premier League club then I think fans would understand the player would want to talk to them.”
“Ross Wilson and Sean Dyche were top notch,” Andrew continued, “Marvin was sad to leave and he appreciated that Sean Dyche was the one who helped nurture him all the way from the youth team.”
Andrew set up his agency in the early 1990s after retiring as a table tennis player - having won three Commonwealth gold medals and attended the Seoul Olympic Games.
He stressed that he has never had a player break a contract and praised Sordell’s attitude during the transfer.
Andrew said: “Marvin conducted himself in an exemplary manner and the Watford fans and the manager were a big factor in the decision whether to go.
“It is important that the fans know the facts.
The facts are he didn’t ask to leave and he would have been happy to stay. Marvin was happy to stay and it was the club who decided to sell him.”

Maybe its a simple case of someone getting the wrong end of the stick, 'littlesqueek' apart we all know surely by now that the club needs to sell to keep going and if you've received offers for players - as we had for MS and AM - then its a great idea to tout them about to see if another club will come in with a better offer. LB sated the club didn't need to sell, but in truth the club does need to sell to cover costs, by stating they don't need to sell means other clubs might not put in cheeky bids as well so it is mind games in this business. Touting players via an agency is good business as it makes sure that bidding wars occur rather than one club coming in and setting the fee demands. All in the key bit is that if Marvin didn't want to go he didn't have to as pointed out by strummerjoe, but he did, despite clarification from both Sky Andrews and LB there was a double current salary offer on the table!!Good luck to Sordell, well done to LB for bringing in vital funds for the club, and enjoy your Agents fees Sky Andrews on this deal, End of story!
One of the most trusted agents in the game and the player was 100% happy with his development at WFC and was in no hurry to jump to the first club who came in for him, it was fat baz who phoned mr Sky and said we have accepted a bid from cardiff city only then did bolton get involved when they were also informed of sordell availibility, cardiff were then not given a second option on another bid as time was ticking and bassini wanted the deal concluded to get his money, when are the fans going to wake up and put a stop to this man being allowed to b** sh** us all, graham taylor you are being made to look a fool. the only time i will ever trust basini is when i see a stand built with the money he has gained from sales or his own investment plan, i fear we will be out of business long before that ever happens under this owner. start to voice concerns starting at tomorows game as while he is getting no pressure from supporters nothing wil lchange only get worse.

You keep on repeating the heaps of money the club are supposedly making but totally ignore the running costs, also involved. The club has a average of 2500 less paying supporters of last season, that is = to around £63000 plus less a match coming in, our last account show we lost 4 million last year as well as a accrued debt of 13 million, this was detailed to show where the ins and outs were, so your 10 million you keep banging on about (which is also not accurate) will not cover our debt, yet we are investing still in players and despite what you don't like development. If Bassini wanted to make more money and quickly he could easily have stopped the Watford Ladies team, reduce the Academy etc but he has not! A + millions pound contract for pitch relay has been ordered the new and very expensive tannoy system £900k is in and new screens also I believe are ordered and the corner starts end of season,. Both AM and ms were offered improved contracts to stay, fact, not signs of anyone doing a runner really is it, so as I said chill out or if not shut up and buy the club instead so we can start coming up with c rap about you instead!

you keep clapping mate and defending your buddy baz while our club is slowly being destroyed
as for facts show me any sign whatsoever of personal investment in WFC by the current owner
show me where current shareholders have been paid what they are owed
show me investment in the team having now overseen over 10million
player sales and sell ons recouped since the summer
show me investment in our ground not promises
Mark my words Saracens will be playing at the vic at beggining of next season , no work will have been done on the ground or pitch by the time you are all expected to have renewed your season ticket in early April
If you want to call Baz's blufff do not renew your season tickets until you see signs of investment from the owner ,
up to you all you can give him your money i.e investing in the club and HOPE he does the same personally after two many years to mention as a season ticket holder i will wait and see
it is not like there will be a shortage of available seats as the season ticket holders have disappeared season after season !

Fact: Bassini has been declared bankrupt and lived on benefts for six months or so in 2007
Fact: It has been widely reported that Baz has been a director of 12 companies, ten of which were stuck off without filing accounts and another one which folded after only ever filing one set of accounts.
Fact: Bassini changed his name after his bankruptcy
Fact: Bassini has refused to reveal who his backers are for his takeover of Watford
Fact; Baz's shares are held by a knee surgeon called Panos Thomas.
Of course, none of the above sounds remotely suspect, whatsoever.

Why is the South West corner not finished ? Baz has sold how many players ? the only promise of note he has kept is to bring new players in, but you can make money if you buy the right player at the right price (i.e Hogg) but when you leave the club high & dry as will happen you can not take a new stand or changing rooms with you to sell on ebay. I know we are a selling club always have been always will be but turn round & say we have no need to sell anyone in this window then the next minute tout around AM & MS to other clubs ,well all you Baz fans have a think about it.

The big question is did the club really make clubs aware of both players availability? If it did then Baz has perhaps been economical with the truth.
Having said that I am not sure I would totally trust the agents version of events either.
You are one of the few posters whose view I can not always Agree with but listen to any way. That's because your thoughts are thought out, and articulated without putting down another's views. So to you Cliff, well done.
I'm with you on this one by the way!
Good morning to you too!

Ha ha the 3 wise monkeys are back in force, Suckler, Muttondown & Alex Hillbilly, of course reverse of the wise monkey's being that you speak evil, see evil, hear evil. Poor Fransen he gets kicked but you 3 just carry on with your bile regardless, wonder why? Re some of the above comments, some thoughts, maybe the offers to buy after Bassini took over were from Simpson, or the salad boy's, Ashcroft wouldn't sell to the Russo boy's so that ruled them out and I guess Simpson would need more money to be a player and neither would have really got past the boards approval on their history (asset stripping may be a better cause on our past owners but short memory's and that), as for Bassini's money who cares were it is from, it stopped the club going into administration, it has enabled us to trade players, it looks like we will be staying in the Championship and that we can put a team on the pitch that can look very good even against a Premiership team and for me it is worth my money to support and continued clapping, because I am a realist to what we are about and doing not a fantasist!

I don't understand why the deadline for accepting the new wage offer was supposedly 1st Feb if it wasnt accepted by then it seems unlikely the wage offer was going to be accepted and that we would by then have missed the transfer deadline day to sell.

Have just seen your note and appreciate your comments.
I have enjoyed following you as you progressively worked your way toward your hat eating adventure.
It just goes to prove that even rugby fans are not all bad!

Graham taylor sort it out your own creadability is also being called into question associating your self with these articles
The Watford Observer understands the Hornets made other clubs aware of Sordell and Adrian Mariappa’s availability through a well-respected sports agency last week.
hawking our players around to a sports agency to sell them says everything you need to know !!
this man / board needs removing our club is being fleeced and slowly destroyed
whose next to be sold off !!
