St Albans swimmer Rizatepe wins Welsh gold medal

City of St Albans Swimming Club member Leyla Manthorpe Rizatepe won a gold medal at the Welsh National Championship.
The swimmer won the 200m freestyle race for 10 to 13 year olds in Swansea with a time of 2.13.85. Rizatepe also won a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle clocking 1.01.60.
Ella Chown, Daniel Millar, Lauren Stott, Shannon Stott and Thomas Toland also achieved personal bests at the event.
At the Irish Nationals held in Dublin in July, Alex Ong took the bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke in the 13 year olds section, while Rosa Curran, Liam Curran and Monica Ong claimed a host of personal bests and places in the finals.
Meanwhile, the club’s Under-15 boys medley relay team were the fastest from Hertfordshire at the British Gas ASA National Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. They beat off stiff competition to end in 25th place overall. The team of Alex Ong, Curran, Oli Perry and Ross Ferreira knocked six seconds off their regional time, finishing the 4x100 metre race in 4.26.60 and improving their seed position by ten places.
Curran also swam in the 100m and 200m fly, making the final in both events.
