Harpenden clinch St Albans & District Trophy

Harpenden Bowls Club’s men's team won the St Albans & District Bob Vise Trophy for the second time in a hard-fought final against Welwyn Garden City.
Rob Newby gave the team a good start by winning the singles 21-20 in a match which went right down to the wire.
With Newby leading 20-17 Neil Sharp, his opponent, scored three shots to level but on the last end Newby put two woods within an inch of the jack but neither were touchers. Sharp fired and missed as Harpenden went one up.
The pairs, Kevin Brazier and Tom Muir, also had a close match but eventually lost 22-20. The fours, John Taylor, Chris Poulter, Woodie Donoghue and Tony Redford, started slowly and were always playing catch-up as they lost 21-10, so 2-1 to Welwyn and the result of the match depended on the triples, John Williams, Bob Howell and David Brooks.
They took an early lead and were never behind and, with one end to go, led 19-8 (on aggregate Welwyn were ahead by one shot). But in a storming finish they scored five shots on the last end to win the match by four shots, 75-71.
Harpenden president Jan Holland gave the club another success by reaching the final of the District Officers' Singles, beating Sheila Roberts 21-18 (Harperbury) in the semi-final.
Two Harpenden teams, Peter and Janet Hubball, Dena Roberts, Redford and Noel and Lyn Roberts and Rob and Linda Newby finished second and third out of 28 teams in the Welwyn Garden City gala.
