1:30pm Wednesday 4th September 2013 in Local Sport
Townsend won the County Championship trophy after the finals were held at Harpenden.
Throughout the season bowls teams from all over the south of the county have been competing in divisions for the right to play in the finals.
The four teams which won their way through were division winners Welwyn and Townsend, and league runners up Harpenden and Oakhill. Townsend competed in the morning against Oakhill and won by by 20 shots with their top rink featuring Peter Thomson, Dave Houghton, John Godman and Danny Macro.
In the afternoon final they faced hosts Harpenden who had won in the morning against Welwyn. Again the margin of victory was fairly clear cut – some 18 shots, but the top rink changed from the morning with Alfie Long, Gary West, Richard Briden and Andrew Briden claiming the accolade.
In the first midweek friendly at Welwyn and District, Townsend won by 38 shots and 4-0 on rinks.
The captain's rink was the top performer with Mike Haslam winning by 30 shots to 15, ably assisted by his skip, Alan Quested, and by Richard Morgan and Alan Tucker.
The second friendly was at home against Hatfield, and looked like being virtually a whitewash for the visitors at half time. The score was four rinks to nil, with the only bright light being that the fifth rink was being drawn 10-10.
But a dramatic fightback started after tea as Townsend started to come back into the contest.
By the 15th end the match was evenly poised, and by the end Townsend had managed to win four of the five rinks and by a margin of 20 shots for a score of 104 against the visitors’ 84.
A memorable second half saw Townsend score 69 shots compared to 31 from the visitors.
