London Colney extend run with Oxhey Jets win
12:31pm Tuesday 29th October 2013 in Local Sport
London Colney completed a 3-1 home win over Oxhey Jets as they secured their fourth consecutive victory in the South Midlands Premier Division on Saturday.
Martin Collins had a couple of shots on goal which went close, while an effort from Matt Newman was pushed behind for a corner kick. Spencer Clarke-Mardel then had a low drive blocked on the line and Danny Fitzgerald saw his long-range shot flash over the crossbar.
On 33 minutes the deadlock was finally broken when a ball from Clarke-Mardel found Newman whose effort was blocked by Will Baker.
The visiting keeper also saved the follow-up shot from Collins but Greg Shaw followed up to net the rebound from ten yards.
Oxhey did not waste any time equalising when a cross-field pass found Adam Lowton and after racing into the box, he drove the ball low past Charlie May to make it 1-1.
This setback woke the Blueboys up and a few minutes later they went back in front when Fitzgerald hit a superb ball to the far side of the box and Newman hit a stunning volley into the top corner of the net.
This was Newman’s 99th goal for the Blueboys and he should have made it a century in the first minute of the second half after he was clean through but his shot struck the post.
Newman set up the hosts’ third goal when he cut in from the right wing and squared the ball for Russell Gallagher to fire past the keeper.
Andrew Brennan and Simeon Armstrong both had shots on goal which went over May’s crossbar as Oxhey tried to get back in the game.
Both Newman and Collins should have added more goals to the Blueboys’ tally but hit their efforts wide of either upright.
The Blueboys Reserves maintained their winning form by beating Holmer Green Reserves away 5-0 with a hat-trick from Callum Wright along with efforts from Simon Beazley and Adam Halford.
London Colney Blues suffered a 3-2 defeat at Vicarage Celtic with Eamon Rogers scoring along with an own goal.
London Colney Colts Under-14s put in a fine team display to beat Cassiobury Rangers 7-2 away from home in the League Cup.
Their goalscorers included Jake Riseborough, Jack Curran, Harry Reeve and Dylan Rushton (2). Joaon Aleixo netted a superb header and team captain Thomas Brown also found the net.
The Under-9s suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 3-0 at home to Harvesters North.
Despite some early pressure, Colney were unable to capitalise and fell behind in the first half to two well-taken goals. Another effort sealed the victory.
London Colney Under-8s edged to a 1-0 win over Bushey & Oxhey Sharks after a strike from Tommy Roberts.
