Harpenden slumped to a 45-17 defeat at Hammersmith & Fulham.
The opposition had plenty to celebrate, in particular James Lowe, who scored five of his side’s seven tries and was also responsible for playing a significant part in one other.
The warning signs were there early on after Hammersmith had been awarded a kickable penalty for offside but opted to run instead. Lowe crossed the line for his first try that was soon translated into a seven-point lead.
A kick to touch and quick possession from the subsequent lineout developed into a rolling maul that Harpenden could not contain. Hammersmith’s Alex Dudley went over for his side’s second try. Another successful conversion kick from wide put the Hammers into a 14-0 lead.
Lowe, then scored a further try, successfully converted, after Hammersmith continued to distribute their possession wisely. Before the half-time whistle had blown, Lowe had completed his hat-trick, taking advantage of some sloppy tackling.
The sole reply from Harpenden in the first half was a well-worked score for full-back Ashley Smith which was converted by centre Aaron Wilde. The score at the end of the first half was 28-7 to the hosts.
A further three tries were scored by the Hammers, two through Lowe and one from left wing Andy Barker, in the second half.
Harpenden replied with two more of their own, from Aaron Wilde and the powerful Michael Goode but were still well beaten.
Harpenden entertain Old Priorians this weekend.
