Harpenden Bowling Club enjoyed a successful week of action.

In the National Two Fours Harpenden B played away at Baldock. The rink of Trevor Tharby, Rick Catchpole, Colin Driscoll and David Brooks drew the game 18-18 after leading for most of the game.

In the other rink Rob Peppiatt, John Williams, John Millins and Jack Blissett gained six shots on the 13th end to take the lead and secured a three-shot victory, which gave Harpenden B an overall 37-34 win.

In the same competition, Harpenden A defeated Townsend 50-25. The rink of Rob Newby, Kevin Brazier, John Osborn and Tom Muir won 33-6 and the rink of Woodie Donoghue, Ken Murray, Tony Redford and Nick Muir lost narrowly 19-17.

One of the Ladies Top Club teams played Hatfield at home on Saturday. The singles was played by Debbie Turner, pairs Avery Hills and Lyn Roberts, triples Beryl Driscoll, Pauline Taylor, and fours Val Christiaans, Beryl Birch, Cynthia Williams and Sheila Rider. The triples won by 13 shots but the other three rinks lost giving Hatfield an overall 3-1 win.

In the first round of the District men’s singles, Noel Roberts playing away to Ted Salvidge at St Albans (Clarence Park), came back from 14-13 down to win in the last three ends by 21-14.

Rob Newby played last year’s champion Peter Thompson (Townsend), and won 21-16. It was a close match but it was finished in style by Newby scoring eight on the last three ends. Two club members had to play each other, with Osborn beating Millins 21-14.

In the County triples two ladies teams from Harpenden also had to play each other. Driscoll, Lorna Thomson and Mary Fisher took an early lead, but Lucy Ratcliffe, Jennie Redford and Birch fought back strongly. However they failed to overtake them, losing by one shot. Pauline Taylor, Jan Holland and Linda Brooks won away against a Welwyn Garden City team 18-13.

The men’s county triples team of Peter Waller, Sam Burgess and Doug Hall won 24-7 (conceded after 16 ends) against a Potters Bar team led by Chris Budden. Catchpole, Driscoll and Newby won against Welwyn Garden City 19-12 and Peter Hubball, John Taylor and Millins won 26-16 against De Havalland.

In the men's county fours against Welwyn Garden City, Barrie Hills, Trevor Tharby, Rob Howell and Chris Poulter won 20-19 . The national senior pairs saw Catchpole and George Tutt beat a Harperbury team 21-19 after an extra end.

The weekend mixed game resulted in a 94-94 friendly draw with Berkhamsted. The top rink was Rob McPherson, Barara Jeffrey, Noel Roberts and L Brooks.

Harpenden had a great start to the District League competition winning on three out of four rinks, the points being 65 to Harpenden and 15 to Hatfield. Top rink went to Noel Roberts, Poulter, Gordon Burrows and Tony Redford.
