Harpenden Bowls Club lost in the first round of the County Triples to Hatfield.

Dena Roberts, Janet Hubball and Linda Newby were beaten by Hatfield’s Kath Cottington, Jackie Bell, Mary Banks 16-10.

In the second round of the men’s triples, Peter Waller, Simon Burgess and Doug Hall had another good result at Potters Bar, winning 14-12 against Ron Golden, Brian Burfoot and Terry Barker.

Harpenden’s Peter Hubball, Gordon Burrows and John Millins beat Harperbury 22-19.

In the National Senior Ladies Pairs, Beryl Driscoll and Newby won their match against Joan Hair and Ann O’Hare of Welwyn and District 22-16.

In the Tony Allcock Trophy, the national competition for over-60’s mixed fours, Harpenden edged to a 39-38 win over Northaw & Cuffley. The team of Linda Newby, Rob Newby, Jan Holland and Tony Redford lost 24-17 but Dena Roberts, John Williams, Linda Brooks and David Brooks helped the side to victory.

A ladies Top Club team played away at Welwyn and District in the first round on Saturday.

In the singles Lesley Tutt defeated Val Callacombe 21-18. The pairs, Newby and Linda Brooks, won by seven shots, while the triples, Dena Roberts, Janet Hubball and Jan Holland, scored five on the 16th end and eventually won by three shots. The fours, Val Thomson, Jennie Redford, Jean Dill and Lucy Ratcliffe, went down by five shots as Harpenden won the contest 3-1 in games.

Harpenden lost their friendly match at De Havilland 68-56. Their top rink was Trevor Tharby, Barbara Jeffrey and Noel Roberts.

Their friendly against Dunstable saw the opposition win four rinks to one. Top rink was Tony Smith, George Tutt and Gordon Burrows.

The men’s district league game against North Mymms ended in a draw with 40 points each and 68 shots apiece. The top rink for Harpenden was John Allwright, Tony Hansard, John Taylor and Colin Driscoll.

The ladies District League against North Mymms resulted in a one-shot defeat. The winning rink was Helen Westcott, Diana Davies, Lyn Roberts and Val Thomson.
