St Albans Judo Club’s Tom Lish won a bronze medal at the Ippon Trophy in Antwerp at the weekend.

Lish, who was featuring for the first time, made it through the pools of his weight group to reach the final as he earned third place for the British team.

St Albans sent six members to the competition after they were selected for the European ranking event.

In order to be selected the young judokas needed to have won a gold or silver medal at the last two national tournaments and have attended the British Judo Council Squad training on a regular basis for the last year. These were Paige Rowlett, Emily Niven, Victoria Cleevely, Jessie Edwards, Tom and Paddy Lish. They attend schools across Hertfordshire, including Bushey and Watford.

Rowlett and Cleevely competed in the 15 to 18 age category and finished fifth after making it through to the finals.

Paddy Lish, Edwards and Niven took part in the 12 to 15 age group and fought hard despite not making it through to the finals.
