Townsend Bowls Club earned an impressive 91-54 victory over Buntingford in the National Top 11.

The two singles were won by Townsend, with Andy Briden prevailing 21-9 and Simon Gilbert succeeding in the two woods by 15-11. Next to finish were the pairs, Peter Thomson and Danny Macro, who, despite being up against one of the opposition`s leading players, managed to force them to concede the game and therefore the match after 16 ends when leading 23-6.

At that stage the fours of Alfie Long, Jason Hall, Peter Armstrong and Gary West were leading 17-10, and the triples, David Day, Dave Houghton and John Godman were also winning 18-15. Townsend eventually completed a 5-0 win on rinks.

In the Jones Cup, Townsend managed home and away victories against a strong Welwyn Garden contingent. The home team was skipped by Peter Armstrong with Andy Bates, Laurie Rackham and Roger Potter and won 27-17. The away side, with captain Gordon Williamson, and comprising Mike Doherty, David Day and Les Perkins, came out on top 23-16.

Townsend faced St Neots in the L&SC Shield Townsend on a two rink home and away basis. The two home rinks won but their scores weren’t enough to make up the deficit accrued away. The winning home rinks were Bates, Hall, Houghton and John Godman, who won 19-16 and Thomson, Rackham, Alan Charran and Andrew Briden, who prevailed 23-14.

In the county league, Townsend came up against Harperbury and managed to win 51-32 on aggregate. One rink drew 18-18 and the other, skipped by John Godman and comprised of Long, Potter and Hall won by the impressive margin of 33-14.

In the district triples, the Townsend trio of Mike Doherty, Day and Charran defeated opposition from Harpenden 17-7.

The district pairs duo of Richard Morgan and Day proved too strong against very experienced opposition from Hemel winning 24-15.

Townsend welcomed five rinks of Harpenden bowlers for a midweek match.

At the halfway stage honours were more or less even, with the visitors ahead on one rink, the hosts on one, and the other three drawn. Gradually Townsend started to pull away to win on all five rinks and by a margin of 122 shots to 80. The top rink was skipped by Rackham, comprised Robbie Ransted, John Oakey and Tony Izzard and won 30-17.

The midweek friendly saw the four Townsend triples, away at Welwyn and District, win by 90 shots to 39, and by 4-0.

The biggest margin of victory was achieved by Wendy Day, Morgan and Gordon Williamson, who won 26-11. Cliff Moule, Robbie Ransted and Janet Metcalfe came out on top 26-10 while David Carter, Alan Quested and Peter Thomson claimed top rink by a one shot margin due to their 23-6 victory.
